Britain promises jets, drones and warships for Strait of Hormuz defense mission

The United States has been blockading Iranian ports to pressure Tehran to agree to terms, a move that has infuriated Iran.

About 20% of the world’s oil and liquefied natural gas uses the vital waterway, and its blockage has caused prices to soar globally.

A ceasefire has been in place between the United States and Iran since April, but President Donald Trump said the country was providing “massive life support.”

The Defense Ministry said the multinational mission announced last month by Britain and France was strictly defensive and aimed at restoring confidence in commercial shipping along the Strait of Hormuz.

It said the donation was backed by £115 million of new funding for minesweeping drones and counter-drone systems.

“Together with our allies, this multinational mission will be defensive, independent and credible,” Healey said in a statement.

The Ministry of Defense said the air defense destroyer HMS Dragon, which is already heading to the Middle East under the plan, will also be “ready to undertake any mission” to secure the strait.

Another British ship, RFA Lyme Bay, continues to be upgraded with new equipment as required for Channel operations, he added.
