Andy Burnham says he will not try to bring Britain back into the EU | Andy Burnham
Andy Burnham has said he will not try to bring the UK back into the European Union and that if we continue to argue the country will be locked in a permanent framework.
Burnham said what Labor had generally offered to voters “wasn’t enough” and said he would replace Keir Starmer as prime minister if he won the Makerfield by-election. “When I stand up, a vote for me will be a vote to change Labor, because Labor needs to change if we are to restore people’s trust.”
In his first major speech since the by-election was announced, the Greater Manchester mayor said there would be a “continued domestic focus” at Makerfield and said: “Let’s fix our country. Let’s get it working again. Let’s get it back to where people want to be.”
Burnham’s EU comments come after his potential leadership rival, Wes Streeting, said the UK should rejoin the EU. This is his first major intervention since he resigned as health minister. “I think Brexit has done damage, but the last thing we need to do right now is to rehash those claims,” Burnham said.

Burnham said she wanted to turn the national spotlight on Makerfield and the North West during the by-election campaign. He said his fight to reform Britain would focus on what could transform those places.
He said: “I would like to apologize to the residents of the Makerfield constituency for the imminent arrival of the circus and for the inconvenience it will cause.”
“But on the other hand, I also want to say to them: I hope you too feel that it is a good thing that the places that make up this constituency, so long forgotten in national politics, are finally at the center of the national debate. And again, about places in this constituency, you can read about many similar places in your constituency.
“Let’s put them at the top of the agenda for the first time in a very long time. That’s what I hope will succeed in this by-election. My plans for Makerfield are ambitious and will demonstrate how we can improve people and places over the next 10 years.”
Burnham said he would argue that places like Makerfield have been failing for 40 years.
“The deindustrialization of the 1980s was devastating across Makerfield. It was followed by deregulation, privatization and austerity – all of which marked 40 years of neoliberalism that was not friendly to the North of England.”
“In the end, 40 years of trickle-down economics that didn’t trickle down to places like Platt Bridge or Hindley. In fact, the system drained wealth out of those places and into the hands of people who were already very well off.
“I think a by-election is very necessary. I think the time has come for a much bigger discussion about how politics needs to change to work properly for the North of England. Because it doesn’t. It doesn’t and this is what we need to focus on. People are losing faith in politics.”
Streeting told a progress meeting on Saturday that he wanted to see Britain “get back into the European Union” and that he was willing to stand up if a leadership race were to take place. This is likely to happen if Burnham wins at Makerfield.
After Burnham’s speech, Starmer insisted he would not set a timetable for leaving No 10 and wanted to fight the next election. Asked if he would resign, Starmer said: “I’m not going to do that… I want to fight the next election. Obviously the local election results, even after the elections in Wales and Scotland, the first task is obviously to turn things around and make sure my focus is in the right place.”
“There has been a lot of activity over the last 10 days, but in my opinion it hasn’t been as focused as it should have been. I remind myself every day that I was elected to office to serve my people and my country. That’s what I believe in, and that’s what I will continue to do.”
