Former British pirate radio station apologizes after accidentally announcing King Charles’ death

A British pirate radio station apologized Wednesday “for all the pain” after accidentally announcing the death of Charles III.

Radio Caroline said in a social media post that the incorrect announcement was made due to a computer error at its main studio in Malden, east Essex, on Tuesday afternoon.

The error ended the so-called monarch procedure, which every broadcaster in the UK is keeping at the ready in the hope that it will not be required, station manager Peter Moore wrote.

“Radio Caroline has been silent out of necessity, which has forced us to reinstate the program and issue an on-air apology,” he said in a Facebook post.

“Caroline is delighted to be broadcasting Her Majesty’s and The King’s Christmas messages and hopes to be able to do so for many years to come,” he said, referring to the King’s traditional Christmas message to his people.

Mr Moore added: “I apologize for any distress caused to His Majesty the King and our listeners.”

The incident on Tuesday happened while Prince Charles and Queen Camilla were in Northern Ireland, where they were performing with an Irish folk group.

The post did not say how long it took for the error to be discovered, but the Korea Press Association reported Wednesday afternoon that the broadcast could not be played on the station’s website from 1:58 to 5 p.m. on Tuesday.

Founded in 1964 to challenge the BBC’s broadcasting monopoly, Radio Caroline previously operated from ships off the coast of England.

After a 1967 law forced the closure of many pirate stations, it continued intermittently until foreign broadcasting ended in 1990.

Caroline and other similar pirate stations inspired the 2009 comedy film “The Boat that Rocked,” starring Bill Nighy and Philip Seymour Hoffman. It’s a story about a group of eccentric DJs who live and work together by the sea.
