The UK Government issues a statement regarding the Global Sumud Flotilla.

A total of 15 British citizens took part in the Global Sumud Flotilla, a major humanitarian mission sailing to Gaza to deliver much-needed aid.

On Monday, Israeli forces began intercepting the flotilla in international waters beyond Israel’s jurisdiction, and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu praised the soldiers for “obstructing” the relief mission.

Israel’s Foreign Ministry said the blockade was completed on Tuesday evening, detaining a total of 430 activists. Lawyers representing the group confirmed on Wednesday that the activists were being transported to the Israeli port of Ashdod.

Another PR fleet is over. All 430 activists were transferred to an Israeli ship and headed to Israel, where they will meet consular representatives.

This flotilla once again proved to be nothing more than a PR stunt.

Among those kidnapped by Israel were two people from Scotland: Hugie Stirling, 68, an activist from Ullapool, and Dr Antonis Vradis, a staff member at the University of St Andrews.

The Foreign Office has remained silent on the case and initially refused to comment when approached by The National.

Officials are understood to have been supporting the families of those affected, but The National previously revealed how they were ‘appalled’ by the Foreign Office’s ‘lack of action’ to ensure the safe return of the activists.

A Foreign Office spokesperson told The National: “We expect the situation to be resolved safely and in accordance with international law and we are working closely with the Israeli authorities.”

“Efforts to deliver aid by sea highlight the dire humanitarian situation in Gaza. Israel must do more to allow sufficient aid into Gaza in line with the agreed minimum targets set out in the 20-point plan.”

This marks a slight shift in stance from the previous flotilla last year, which included four activists from Scotland.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said, “We expect the situation to be resolved safely while respecting international law and the rights of all passengers.”

But delivering aid on the scale needed to Gaza “can only happen through well-established land routes,” he said, a move that appears not to have been taken this time.

The British government’s statement came as the United States imposed sanctions on four activists behind the flotilla. They claimed without evidence that organizers were seeking access to Gaza “to support Hamas.”

“The pro-terrorist fleet seeking access to Gaza is an outrageous attempt to undermine President Trump’s successful progress toward lasting peace in the region,” Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said in a statement.

“Treasury will continue to block Hamas’ global financial support network wherever it resides in the world.”

Human rights activists have dismissed the claims, saying the Trump administration is using sanctions and the label “terrorism” to silence Palestinian activities.
