Britain braces for long, hot traffic jams with additional border checks | transport
The particularly hot Bank Holiday weekend at the end of May is expected to see more traffic on the roads than usual as the half-term holidays begin in parts of England, car companies have warned.
Coastal roads are expected to be the busiest with temperatures expected to exceed 30C in places by Monday, with long queues expected for beach resorts and the port of Dover, where border check delays are adding to holiday congestion.
The RAC predicts almost 19 million drivers will be on UK roads over the long weekend, which is one million more than over the same holiday period in 2025.
The poll found that nearly four in 10 drivers plan to travel for leisure, with peak traffic expected on Friday and Saturday. But about 5% of drivers said high fuel prices would force them to stay home. The average price of petrol across the UK is 158.52p, the highest since December 2022, according to the RAC.
The AA said the survey showed that although shopping centers and retail parks would attract more traffic overall, day trips to the coast would make up a larger proportion of leisure trips than overnight trips.
It warned of traffic delays heading to resorts on England’s east and north-west coasts and queues on roads into the south-east and Cornwall, including the A303, M5 and A38.
Parking company RingGo said data from the past bank holiday period showed Saturday would be the busiest day for beach day trips, with Bournemouth generally seeing the biggest increase in visitor numbers.
Transport analysis company Inrix said the worst traffic congestion this weekend would be on the M1, M25, M5 and M6.

Ferry passengers passing through the Port of Dover have been warned to expect long queues at border checks due to the implementation of the EU’s Immigration and Exit System (EES).
About 18,000 travelers depart from Friday to Sunday, with the highest number of departures on Saturday morning.
The EES software for the French border is not yet fully operational. This comes despite expensive kiosks being set up at the port, with police still carrying out manual checks and reports of hour-long waits at the border by 6am on Friday.
Up to two million people are expected to fly abroad from the UK in the coming days, despite concerns about EES delays at airports and uncertainty over jet fuel due to the war with Iran. While airlines are reporting delays in bookings for summer flights, demand for half-term holidays appears to have remained.
Travel association Abta said its members were reporting strong demand for short trips to the Mediterranean, particularly Spain and its islands, Italy, Portugal, Croatia and Greece.
“Despite economic and geopolitical challenges, people are still going on holiday this May and making the most of great deals,” CEO Mark Tanger said.
More than 12,000 flights (over 2 million seats) are scheduled to take off from the UK over the weekend, with Friday being the busiest day for travel and Palma de Mallorca the biggest single destination after Ireland’s capital Dublin, according to aviation analysts Cirium.
Network Rail said the majority of Britain’s rail network would remain open to passengers over the bank holiday weekend despite plans for £64m worth of engineering work.
Some services will be suspended, including parts of the east coast mainline between London and Edinburgh, with rail replacement buses running between York and Darlington from Saturday to Monday.
Buses will also replace trains between Newport and Bristol Parkway on the Great Western main line. Thameslink trains do not pass through central London, so passengers must start and end their journey at King’s Cross St Pancras or London Bridge.
Some rail services between the Midlands and Birmingham, Liverpool and London will be suspended due to the strike. TSSA union members are planning to strike on West Midlands and London North West Railway, resulting in shorter timetables on Friday and Saturday.

Almost all insurance providers, no matter if they are well-known brands or just local insurers, have an online presence. Drivers are no longer required to get quotes from just a few known insurance companies. Also, local and regional insurers can provide lower insurance rates for the same services. Accurate insurance estimates. Online quotes can only be accurate if the customers provide accurate and real info about their car models and driving history. Lying about past driving incidents can make the price estimates to be lower, but when dealing with an insurance company lying to them is useless.
