Iran’s Supreme Leader Locked Up in Secret Location, US Intelligence Says

U.S. intelligence shows that Iran’s supreme leader is effectively holed up in a secret location with little access to the outside world and reached only through a maze of mail, according to U.S. officials with knowledge of the matter.

Iranian officials authorized to work with the Trump administration have struggled to communicate within their own government system — and that’s a key reason why details of a potential Iran deal and past agreements have been slow to emerge.

When the United States sends the proposed details, difficulty reaching the supreme leader means there may be a long delay before the United States receives a response, two of the officials said.

A White House spokesperson declined to comment on intelligence on the supreme leader’s whereabouts or Iranian communications methods.

A senior administration official said Sunday that the supreme leader had agreed to the contours of the current draft agreement, and President Trump posted on Truth Social that he anticipated the final word would be delivered in the coming days.

Iranian Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei, who was injured in US and Israeli strikes as part of Operation Epic Fury, is taking extreme measures to avoid strikes similar to those that killed his father, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who led Iran from 1989 until February 28. Mojtaba Khamenei has not been officially seen or heard from in public since before the war began.

U.S. and Israeli intelligence obtained from within the Iranian government helped locate and eliminate much of Iran’s top leadership during the war, one of the officials said.

Currently, most of Iran’s leaders do not see the light of day, spending weeks in highly fortified bunkers and avoiding speaking to each other unless absolutely necessary, the sources said.

“Watching them try to figure out how to talk to each other is almost like watching a sitcom. They’re completely exasperated,” one official said.

The most prudent measures are taken by the Supreme Leader.

By design, even officials at the highest levels of the Iranian government do not know where he is and have no way to contact him directly.

Instead, messages are transmitted through a courier network created to mask the location of the supreme leader.

“That’s why we see people saying things like: ‘The Supreme Leader has accepted the framework’ or ‘We are waiting for a response on the final points of the agreement’. Every piece of information he receives is dated and there is a lot of latency in his responses,” an official said.

The Supreme Leader communicated in general terms to his subordinates, telling them which issues they can negotiate on and which ones should not be discussed.
