Britain experienced its hottest day of May on Monday, with temperatures reaching 34.8C.

The unseasonably hot weather made it the hottest day of the year for the third consecutive day. Temperatures at Kew Gardens, south-west London, reached 34.8 degrees Celsius, two degrees higher than the highest May temperature recorded before the bank holiday.

Monday’s hot weather also broke the record for the hottest Bank Holiday on record. Temperatures exceeded the 33.3C recorded in August 2019.

A Met Office spokesman said: “Today will be the hottest day of May on record in the UK, with highs expected to reach 35 degrees.”

“Records are usually only broken by a tenth of a degree, so this heat wave is unprecedented for the year.”

Monday’s previous record high of 33.5C was recorded at Heathrow, west London, exceeding the previous May temperature record of 32.8C set in 1944.

Northern England, Wales, the Midlands, eastern England and south-east England all experienced temperatures around 30C on Monday.

Brits have flocked to beaches across the country to soak up the sun over the long weekend.

South East Water has apologized and handed out bottled water after about 500 customers suffered power outages and low pressure during the heatwave at the weekend.

A heatwave has been officially declared in eight regions of south-east England, with temperatures reaching 27C for the third day in a row.

A Met Office spokesman said: “Temperatures rarely exceed 35 degrees even in the summer, so for temperatures to get close to 35 degrees in May is quite historic.”

High temperatures reached 32.3C at Kew Gardens, south-west London, on Sunday, while parts of south-east England exceeded 30C. Britain recorded its warmest night in 81 years.

Tuesday is set to be another hot day, with highs expected to reach 35C again in London and surrounding areas.

Temperatures are expected to exceed 30C in parts of England and eastern Wales on Tuesday.

A series of yellow heatwave warnings have been issued for the East Midlands, West Midlands, East England, London and the South East.

Officials have warned that the hot weather could have a serious impact across health and social care services, as well as a rise in deaths, and the warning will be in place until 5pm on May 27.
