Keir Starmer warns of Russian aggression as Britain and Poland agree new treaty.

Sir Keir held talks with Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk at RAF Northold, west London, on Wednesday to formalize the treaty.

They also visited a nearby Battle of Britain bunker and laid a commemorative wreath.

Sir Keir said: “There is no greater challenge for both our countries than Russian aggression, and we know that it is having an impact not only on Ukraine itself, but also on our countries beyond Ukraine.”

“This is the context in which we sign a truly generational development in the security and defense relationship between our two countries.”

Tusk said through an interpreter that Britain and Poland’s “shared values”, including the rule of law and human rights, provided the “foundation for the treaty”.

He said some people “may now say these values ​​are outdated and obsolete, but they are important for us and our country.”

The text of the treaty states that the UK, Poland and the whole of Europe aim to “strengthen close cooperation in the field of security and defence, and prepare for the challenges ahead.”

The report identified Russia as “the most serious long-term threat” to Euro-Atlantic security and “the need to respond to its malign actions.”

It also reaffirms the UK and Poland’s “strong commitment” to NATO and says migrant smuggling is a “shared challenge that requires joint solutions”.

The British government said the two countries would discuss ways to act through a ‘new joint action plan on illegal migration’.

They added that this includes targeting social media use by smuggling gangs, maximizing information sharing and using new technologies for surveillance perimeters.

Asked whether such treaties had had an impact, Arnold told the BBC: “To be quite frank, this treaty specifically does not.”

“So it is a bit confusing why we have already decided to add an additional treaty to that relationship,” he added, highlighting the agreement signed between the two countries from 2018 to 2023.

“The main part is actually not about new defenses and security, but about migration and related security issues,” Arnold added.

He has previously stated that this is important, saying: “When you start tying together a lot of policy areas, there’s a slight risk that if there’s a slight difference of opinion in one policy area, like immigration, that could harm other areas, namely defense and security.

“So I think there are some risks in the document itself about expanding relations with Poland, but there is nothing in it about this kind of generational change or anything like what the prime minister described.”

Arnold went on to question Britain’s ability to implement what it has concluded through treaty-based agreements with other countries.
