Wasser coronavirus outbreak is contained, Wolverine officials say

VASSAR — Due to the occurrence of COVID-19 at the Wolverine Human Services facility in Vassar, facility personnel have informed the public that everything is under control.
Paul Whitney, vice president of housing programs at Wolverine Human Services, said he has been working on a facility safety plan since Governor Gretchen Whitmer began issuing executive orders in March.
“I requested the COVID-19 test in March and April, but I didn’t receive anything until the beginning of May,” he said.
Earlier this month, one of the facility’s teens was sick and had to take him to a local hospital to be tested, according to Whitney, with good results.
“We’re ready and still swaying,” Whitney said, adding that they should have been tested earlier because they’re a meeting facility like a nursing home.
Wolverine Human Service was finally able to secure 300 tests from the Great Lakes Bay Health Center and Quest Diagnostics. These were able to perform tests on-site at Wasser.
Testing of 175 adolescents and staff found that 25 female adolescents and 4 staff were infected with COVID-19. They are all isolated. Only 3 of those who tested positive showed symptoms.
“More than 95% of those who test positive have no symptoms,” Whitney said. “We don’t know. The terrifying part about this is that every time you go to a gas pump or get groceries, you have to act like you’re there.”
Wolverine’s Wasser campus covers 135 acres and consists of four separate programs. The campus has one facility for women only, two facilities for men and one facility for men and women.
The test also showed that the young men in the facility were positive.
Tuscola County reported only 23 new cases on Tuesday, despite 29 confirmed positive cases when the outbreak was announced on Tuesday.
There are also tests being conducted on the organization’s Saginaw and Detroit campuses, which are still waiting for results to come back.
Wolverine Human Services plans to re-test residents and staff for asymptomatic people next week.
In the aftermath of these results, the organization notified the children’s parents, the staff’s family, and state representatives of the problem.
Whitney admitted that by the end of the week there would be insufficient supplies, but staff are wearing personal protective equipment that had to be purchased at a higher price in the secondary market.
“I ordered 10,000 masks in March, but I haven’t received them yet,” Whitney said, adding that these masks are shipped from China.
Whitney is unaware of other similar agencies handling outbreaks in Michigan. Wolverine only knows about the outbreak through testing, so it doesn’t know how the other facilities are testing.
“There are many child care facilities in this state that need the same help as we do,” Whitney said.
