A 7.1-magnitude earthquake struck Mexico, killing at least one person

Several outlets reported that a 7.1-magnitude earthquake struck southwestern Mexico on Tuesday evening.

The New York Times reports that at least one person has died.

The Associated Press reported that Guerrero State Governor Hector Astudillo said the person was killed in a plume fall in Coyoca de Benitez, a town near Acapulco.

“We heard loud noises from the building, noises from the windows, things fell inside the house, and the electricity went out,” Acapulco resident Sergio Flores told The Associated Press. And you heard people screaming, very nervous people.”

The earthquake struck about seven miles southwest of the port city of Acapulco at about 9 p.m.

CNN reported that the shaking from the quake could be felt more than a five-hour drive away in Mexico City.

At least 1.6 million people were left without power in Mexico City, the states of Mexico, Guerrero, Oaxaca and Morelos, the Federal Electricity Commission said in a tweet.

At about 1 a.m., Mayor Claudia Sheinbaum said electricity was restored to most areas.

The Associated Press reported that officials in various regions, including Mexico City and Acapulco, said there was no significant damage.

The mayor of Acapulco, Adela Roman, said there were gas leaks in several places and people were nervous about the aftershocks.

After the earthquake, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration issued a tsunami warning for the state of Guerrero but later said there was no danger of a tsunami.

The US Geological Survey said Mexico has a “long history” of devastating earthquakes and is one of the most seismically active regions in the world. The country is located on top of three large tectonic plates. More than 9,500 people were killed in an 8-magnitude earthquake in September 1985. CNN reported that the country was also hit by two earthquakes in September 2017.
