20 killed in southern Pakistan earthquake, hundreds injured, South Asia News

A shallow earthquake struck southern Pakistan in the early hours of Thursday morning, killing about 20 people and seriously injuring dozens, government officials said. The magnitude of the earthquake was 5.7.

Many victims died when ceilings and walls collapsed. Health workers treated the wounded with the help of torches after a power outage.

Sohail Anwar Hashemi, a senior provincial government official, told AFP that a woman and six children were among the 20 dead.

“We are receiving information that 20 people were killed in the earthquake. Rescue efforts are underway,” said Regional Interior Minister Mir Ziaullah Langao.

Naseer Nassar, head of disaster management in Balochistan province, told AFP that between 15 and 20 people had died, but warned that the death toll could rise.

The remote mountain city of Harnai in Balochistan was hardest hit.

The earthquake caused a power outage in the area, with health workers working without lights in a poorly equipped government hospital.

“We were working without electricity with the help of flashlights and portable lamps,” a senior official at Harnai State Hospital, Zahor Tarin, told AFP.

“Most of the wounded had broken limbs. Dozens were brought back after first aid, while 40 seriously injured people were sent to Quetta in ambulances,” he added.

The US Geological Survey said the quake had a magnitude of 5.7 and struck at about 3 a.m. at a depth of about 20 km.

The earthquake was also felt in Quetta, the capital of Balochistan province.

Pakistan stretches across the border where the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates meet, making the country vulnerable to earthquakes.
