The earthquake-supported Wellington Central Library will cost nearly $ 200 million, which is $ 67 million more than building a new library from scratch.

The Wellington City Council released details of the engineers ’report at the seismological building on Friday, and revealed a range of options for restoring the city’s central facility that closed in March last year.

Among them are three strengthening options ranging from $ 90.8 million to $ 199.8 million.

The latter includes a complete upgrade to construction services including basic insulation and internal remodeling and better connection to the Civic Square area.

Construction will begin around mid-2022 with the building opening around February 2026.

The “medium-range” enhancement option was also provided at an expected cost of $ 151.8 million.

But the report also revealed that demolishing the existing library and creating a new library of the same size would only cost $ 133 million – $ 67 million cheaper than a possible redevelopment process.

Creating a new library using the entire building you’re located in – including the third and fourth floors that currently occupy office space – will cost $ 160 million.

No timeframe has been set in the report for new structures, but Wellington Mayor Andy Foster said during an online briefing that it would take about a year or two longer than redevelopment.

When asked if he had a preference, Foster said he looked forward to hearing Wellington’s views.

However, council officials “clearly gave us the advice we need to go with a high flexibility option.”

The project will be funded through borrowing, which increases Council cost pressure in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic.

“This is a big decision,” Foster said.

“All options are very expensive. They are basically” big “and” bigger. “

However, the building’s life will be very long and the cost will be paid again over a long period of time.

“The council wants a flexible, modern and exciting library,” Foster said in a statement.

“It is a great opportunity to transfer our central library services from the 1980s to the future.

“Many of us have seen how modern libraries like T Christranga in Christchurch and our Johnsonville private library in Waitohi attract people, connect them to both groups, and learn in new ways.

City councilor Fleur Fitzsimmons, who owns the council’s library bag, said the current building is no longer suitable as a library of the 21st century.

“The central library is a valuable public place where everyone is welcome. People really miss it, we need to open it as soon as possible.”

The council members will consider the proposals on Wednesday before going out for general comments in June.
