5.1-magnitude earthquake hits Izmir, Turkey, no injuries

Turkey’s Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD) announced that an earthquake measuring 5.1 on the Richter scale occurred in the Aegean province of Izmir in the early hours of Tuesday morning. There were no reports of injuries or damage so far.

The Disaster and Emergency Management Authority said the earthquake occurred in the western province of Izmir at 7 a.m. (4 a.m. GMT) local time.

The epicenter was 56.18 kilometers (34.90 miles) from Urla district in Izmir, with a depth of 3.97 kilometers.

The Disaster and Emergency Management Authority also reported that aftershocks with a magnitude of 4.3 degrees were recorded. The aftershock was reported to have occurred at a depth of 7.16 km.

“After the earthquake in Urla, no injuries or damages have been reported so far. The Disaster and Emergency Management Department said on Twitter that field survey work in the area is currently ongoing.

Izmir Yavuz Governor Selim Koçgar also made a statement saying, “Currently, there was no negativity in our city in the 5.1-magnitude earthquake off the coast of Urla district.”

Izmir was the scene of the deadliest earthquake in 2020 in the country. On October 30 last year, 117 people were killed in the county when a 6.6-magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of the city, wreaking havoc particularly in Bayraklı district, about 66 kilometers from Urla. Earthquakes are not uncommon in a country that sits on multiple active fault lines.
