US resumes ‘powerful strikes’ against Iran after Strait of Hormuz ship attacks, CENTCOM says

The United States launched a “series of powerful strikes” against Iran on Tuesday in retaliation for Iranian attacks on three commercial ships transiting the Strait of Hormuz, the US Central Command said.

“US Central Command forces have begun launching a series of powerful strikes against Iran to impose high costs by targeting and attacking commercial vessels crewed by innocent civilians in an international waterway,” CENTCOM said in a message to ceasefire.”

New American and Iranian attacks threaten to reignite conflict in the region and could raise fears of a further closure of the Strait of Hormuz. Oil prices rose dramatically during the conflict between the United States and Iran, fueling inflation around the world.

The strikes come after the United States and Iran exchanged blows last month following similar Iranian attacks on commercial shipping in the strait, which is one of the world’s most critical chokepoints that Iran has kept closed for months this year. Both sides agreed to withdraw within days of last month’s exchange, amid a tenuous ceasefire as negotiations to end the war continue.

Washington and Tehran agreed in June to a memorandum of understanding to end the conflict, which included an end to fighting and the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz. The latest US retaliatory strikes will once again test that agreement, which has held in previous skirmishes.

Tensions have risen since Iran attacked ships passing through the strait earlier this week, with the United States revoking a sanctions waiver on Iranian oil on Tuesday. Oil futures rose sharply in response to the pressure.

The war between the United States and Iran began on February 28, when the United States and Israel launched strikes against the country that killed its leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

President Donald Trump has repeatedly insisted that the goal of the war is to prevent Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons, which is one of the subjects of negotiations under the memorandum of understanding.

Trump is currently in Ankara, Turkey, for the NATO summit and meeting with leaders of the transatlantic alliance. Turkey shares a border with Iran.
