Magnitude 6.2 earthquake strikes near Tonga less than two weeks after volcano eruption

Jan 27 (UPI) – Less than two weeks after an underwater volcano erupted cutting communications on the island of Tonga, a 6.2-magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of the Pacific island Thursday.

The quake struck about 135 miles northwest of the city of Bangai in Tonga, at a depth of 9 miles, according to the US Geological Survey.

There were no reports of casualties or damage to any of the inhabited islands that make up the Tonga region.

The seismic activity came 12 days after the eruption of the Hengja Tonga-Hung Hapai volcano and caused a tsunami that caused widespread damage in Tonga and minor impacts up the west coast of the United States.

Since then, many countries, including Australia, New Zealand and Japan, have provided aid to Tonga – such as clean drinking water. Three deaths were blamed for the eruption and tsunami that hit the islands.

Repairs to underwater fiber-optic cables that were cut during an eruption may not be repaired until next month, officials said, leaving many islands without a way to connect to the rest of the world.
