Azores prepares for evacuation amid fears of major earthquake | Portugal

Authorities on a Portuguese island in the North Atlantic are preparing for a possible evacuation of local residents, as earthquakes for six consecutive days have raised fears of a major earthquake or volcanic eruption.

The head of the regional government of the Azores said Thursday that airlines are increasing the number of flights to and from São Jorge, where about 8,300 people live, for people who prefer to leave now.

Scientists say it is difficult to predict the consequences of persistent, albeit low-intensity, seismic activity.

“Anything can happen, nothing can happen,” Azores President Jose Manuel Bolero told reporters in televised remarks during a visit to the island.

Officials at the Vilas Island municipality, which has been the epicenter of more than 2,000 minor earthquakes since March 19, are taking elderly people who may find it difficult to quickly evacuate to another part of the island as a precaution.

Emergency services have set up safe corridors for traffic and temporary shelter for evacuees on the eastern side of the island in case they are needed. Vilas has a population of about 3000 people.

Officials said any public alerts would be broadcast on local radio, on social media or by ringing church bells.

São Jorge is one of the nine islands that make up the Azores, which lie about 1,500 kilometers (about 1,000 miles) west of the Portuguese mainland.

The island is about 58 kilometers (36 miles) long and 6 kilometers (about four miles) wide at its widest point. Fishing and agriculture are the main economic pillars of the island.

A line of dormant volcanic cones runs along the central edge of the island, reaching just over 1,000 meters (3,300 ft) at its highest point.

São Jorge is a volcanic island that experienced volcanic eruptions in 1580 and 1808. Both are reported to have caused casualties, but reliable information from that time is not available.

The last volcanic eruption on land in the Azores was in 1957 on Faial Island. An earthquake in the same island in 1998 killed 10 people.
