How a Volunteer Scientology Minister from Nepal Helped His Nation | National

LOS ANGELES, CA, April 6, 2022 (SEND2PRESS NEWSWIRE) – Seven years ago this month, a 7.8-magnitude earthquake devastated Nepal. A volunteer minister from Scientology led rescuers, scouts, and volunteers who arrived from all over the world on a mission to save lives.

Within 24 hours of the earthquake that struck Nepal on April 25, 2015, killing about 8,800, Scientology Minister for Volunteers Binod Sharma mobilized an emergency response team in Kathmandu. He led his volunteers as they comb the ruins of his devastated city in search of survivors. He went on to lead an international team of rescuers and volunteers to help his people. Sharma worked as an interpreter for Los Topos, the famous Mexican Search and Rescue Team, and Colombia’s National Service of Assistance Technicians (CINAT), who were brought to Nepal by the International Headquarters of Ministers Volunteers in Los Angeles. He coordinated their activities with the work of volunteer ministers from India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Thailand and as far afield as Australia, Denmark and America.

Among the arrivals were EMTs, nurses and doctors, and Sharma’s team helped them provide the necessary medical care and first aid to the earthquake-injured in Kathmandu. Volunteer ministers headed with them to remote towns and villages cut off by the rubble and remains of destroyed vehicles that blocked roads through treacherous mountain passes.

They provided food and temporary shelter and helped rebuild homes and schools.

Sharma led his teams through villages and forgotten disaster-stricken areas, eventually providing assistance to 4 million Nepalese. To bring permanent assistance, he established a headquarters of volunteer ministers in Kathmandu to train more than 150 groups of volunteer ministers across his country.

In recognition of Charnma’s humanitarian work, Church of Scientology leader David Miscavige presented him with the Medal of Freedom from the International Association of Scientologists in 2017.

The Church of Scientology’s Volunteer Ministers Program is a religious social service established in the mid-1970s by Scientology founder L. Ron Hubbard.

The mandate of the Volunteer Minister is to be “a person who assists his fellow men on a voluntary basis by bringing truth and spirituality back into the lives of others.” Their belief: “A volunteer minister does not close his eyes to the pain, wickedness, and injustice of existence.
