Before deploying boosters to the age group, the Australian Immunotechnology Advisory Group (ATAGI) needs to give the final green light.
Medical regulators recommend giving booster 6 months after the first course of the COVID-19 vaccine.
A regulatory spokesman said the review of booster vaccine data was rigorous.
“Regulatory approval for booster immunity in this age group has also been granted in Israel, the United Kingdom and the United States,” a spokesman said.
“TGA will continue to work closely with international regulatory agencies to jointly review COVID-19 vaccines and treatments if they want to coordinate regulatory approaches, share information and speed up assessments.”
The final decision on booster approval is expected to be made by ATAGI within the next few days.
Previously, booster shots were only available to people over the age of 16.
Almost 70% of the eligible population has received the first booster shot.
The fourth dose, the second booster deployment, began earlier this week in the elderly and vulnerable Australians prior to winter.
Meanwhile, opposition leader Anthony Albanese said Labor would consider whether a Royal Commission was needed to handle Australia’s COVID-19.
It followed the publication of the Senate investigation report on a pandemic, calling on the Commission in 19 recommendations.
Albanese, who told reporters in Adelaide, said it was clear that he needed to consider dealing with a pandemic.
“I would have thought it was pretty clear that you somehow needed to see how things happened and whether things could be better in the future,” he said.
“We also have a variety of policies, including the establishment of the Australian Centers for Disease Control and Prevention owned by other OECD countries, to ensure that you get their constant advice and best practices.”
The Senate Committee’s report also calls for greater transparency in health agencies such as the Australian Health Conservation Commission and the establishment of a disease management center.
Other recommendations included requiring the government to report to Congress every two years as to whether it was ready to deal with a future pandemic.
Despite recommendations from the investigation, Liberal Senator and Vice-Chairman James Patterson said the Commission was a means of a partisan attack on the government’s pandemic process.
