San Jose Earthquakes splits from manager Matias Almeida

Sources have confirmed to ESPN that Matias Almeida will miss the San Jose Earthquakes manager position.

Tom Bogert of MLSsoccer.com was the first to report the news.

The decision to part with the Argentine was made hours after the Coix’s 2-2 draw with Nashville, which extended San Jose’s winless start to the season to seven games, and made them the only MLS team without a win. It is not clear how much Almeida will pay for the remainder of his contract.

Sources told ESPN that Almeida told the team after last week’s 4-3 loss to Houston that he was “finished” as coach of San Jose and that he would speak with the team the following Monday. But when Monday came, there was no more clarity about his future. Those sources also said that was something Almeida had said to the team more than once over the years in the wake of tough losses.

Almeida wraps up his three-plus seasons in San Jose with a regular season record of 31-42-25. He was signed with great fanfare and high hopes before the end of the 2018 regular season. The man’s defense system for Almeida was expected to change the fortunes of a team that had qualified for the playoffs only twice in the previous eight seasons.

While the team played exciting football at times during the Almeida period, the team lacked consistency, especially on the defensive side of the ball. Once the rest of the league became more familiar with his tactics, the team’s results suffered. San Jose reached the playoffs during the 2020 pandemic shortened season, but that was done with the benefit of MLS expanding the Western Conference playoff field to eight teams, with San Jose slipping into last place.

For his part, Almeida has criticized on multiple occasions San Jose’s underspending compared to most of the rest of the league.

Among the names that have already been suggested as a potential replacement are El Salvador coach Hugo Perez, as well as former Quakes player and assistant Ian Russell, who ran the team’s sub-team at Renault for four seasons.
