Magnitude 5.7 earthquake strikes Kirum, Papua

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – A 5.7 magnitude earthquake hit Papua today, April 25, at 06:50:33 West Indonesia Time (WIB). The Agency for Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics (BMKG) has updated the size to 5.4.

The epicenter of the earthquake was located on Earth at 3.79 degrees south latitude and 140.52 degrees east longitude, or Senge-Kerum District, at a depth of 66 km.

It was a moderate earthquake caused by deformation of the continental crust under the Gaya Wijaya belt and thrust belt, said Bambang Setyo Prayetno, head of the BMKG Earthquake and Tsunami Center.

“The results of the source mechanism analysis show that the earthquake occurred in a deviant directional movement mechanism,” Bambang explained in his statement, Monday.

The tremor was felt very strongly in Jayapura and Kerum on the MMI III-IV intensity scale and in Wamina on the MMI II scale. In addition, the modeling results showed that it has no possibility of a tsunami.

As of 07:20 WIB, the BMKG had recorded no earthquake-related activity. Local residents are asked to remain calm, not to be provoked by baseless issues and to avoid the cracked buildings destroyed by the earthquake.
