When I see my cat running, I expect another earthquake in Dubrovnik

Shake, baby, shake! It wasn’t fun at all. It wasn’t my first experience of an earthquake in Dubrovnik, but it was definitely the strongest earthquake I’ve ever felt.

I was just getting ready for bed, it was about 11.00 pm last Friday and it was one of those warm spring nights that still makes you dream of the warmer summer nights. The air was so silent that you probably heard a pin fall in front of my house.

“Shall we sleep?” I asked my pets, since I was alone in the house, of course, I was talking to dogs and cats most of the day. Then in a flash the cat darted across the living room and out straight through the open back door. strange. There were no cat fighting sounds anywhere. “what’s wrong with her?” I believed.

Then I heard a rumble from afar.

It sounded like thunder, but with the bass maxed out. Then thunder struck! It felt like a train was crashing into my front room. The quiet night air turned into a mass of picture frames, books and junk shattered as trinkets hit the ground. “It was as if the house was going, clumsily as if it was limping from one foot to the other,” she explained to a friend after the event.

It was the start of a sleepless weekend as the many aftershocks reminded us that it’s not over yet.

Like I said, this wasn’t my first earthquake, I lost count of how many I felt. Anything under 4 degrees is a slight ripple in your coffee. This was closer to six and would turn your espresso into a cappuccino. It continued over and over again.

My dog, well, there was one dog who had his tail between his legs and was making the door open. I quickly followed behind. Fortunately, I live next to a large olive grove and green fields, and this was the best place. The other dog is not the youngest and slept like a child unaware of rock and roll.

I don’t want to imagine how I felt in a building taller than apartments. Penthouse, no thank you!

Now to get some context on this shaking, the 2020 earthquake that caused sustained damage in Zagreb was 5.3 on the Richter scale. The damage caused in Albania in 2019 was 6.4 and 51 people were killed. Our most recent earthquake was between these two. It wasn’t fun at all.

Strangely enough, the UK is one of the countries that experiences the most earthquakes on an annual basis. Yes, it’s hard to believe. The British have up to 300 earthquakes a year. Or about one every day. Did you feel one? never. The vast majority won’t even cause a ripple in your teacup, let alone cause the shelves to fall off the wall. This latter city felt like Dubrovnik in Austria and Italy.

And the thousands of tourists in the city (and yes, many, many called me) will get a souvenir from their vacation that they certainly did not expect. Imagine the conversations when they get home. “How was Dubrovnik?” – “Bumpy.” – “What do you mean by flight?” – “No, the city!”

So I stood in the dark with a dog shaking and a house shaking, I was just too aware how small we all are. Mother nature is huge and we are small. And she told us that on Earth Day this year, now how relevant it is.

After 43 years I found myself in pajamas in a field – date April 22nd. There is just something about the Easter period.

I didn’t see my cat again until the next morning. How do cats feel earthquakes? I have no idea. But next time I see her, which I hope won’t be too long, make a Usain Bolt impression and collect from the door I’ll follow.
