The Shropshire earthquake was felt in Lancashire as the UK hit the biggest earthquake in 4 years

The British Geological Survey (BGS) said the Shropshire earthquake occurred at a depth of 8 km (5 miles) 12 miles northeast of Shrewsbury at about 2.45 pm.

Their team of experts said the 3.8-magnitude earthquake – the largest in the UK since 2018 – may have been felt up to 100km away.

When the earthquake struck, residents of towns and villages around Shropshire reported their homes shaking.

One resident said her legs “turned to jelly” because she could feel the floor of her bedroom trembling underneath.

But the earthquake’s strength may also have been felt 65 miles north of Lancashire.

He tweeted, “Did you feel an earthquake in Corley?!?!”

The Shropshire earthquake is the largest to hit the UK since a 3.8-magnitude earthquake occurred near Grimsby on 9 June 2018.

He quickly checked the British Geological Survey website for any reports, and soon learned that a 3.8-magnitude earthquake had been recorded in the West Midlands.

The BGS has since confirmed that it has received a number of reports from those who felt the quake within 100 km of the epicenter in Shropshire.

When the earthquake shook Lancashire

A spokesman for the British Geological Survey, which monitors seismic activity in the UK, said: “We can confirm that our sensors detected a 3.8 millimeter earthquake at 2.47 pm on Monday (May 30), about 16 km north of East Shrewsbury.

The British Geological Survey team confirmed that a 3.8-millimeter earthquake was detected by its sensors about 16 km northeast of Shrewsbury.

“We have received a number of reports that people are feeling it in the area and beyond.

“An earthquake of this size can produce a strong shaking within about 10 kilometers of the epicenter, but the damage is unlikely.

“People may have felt the earthquake at distances of up to 100 kilometres.

BGS said an earthquake of this magnitude tends to only happen once every two years in the UK.

The team added: “There is an earthquake of this magnitude, or larger, approximately every two years on average somewhere in the UK.

“Earthquakes like this are caused by small movements on faults within the Earth’s crust.

“The last earthquake of this magnitude (3.8 mil) was near Grimsby on June 9, 2018.”
