Strong earthquake in Sichuan province hit more than 13,000 people

BEIJING/Chengdu: The powerful 6.1-magnitude earthquake that rocked China’s Sichuan Province on Wednesday affected more than 13,000 people and damaged five hydropower stations as well as severely damaged several homes, local rescue officials said Thursday.

Four people were killed and 41 injured in the earthquake that rocked Lushan County, Ya’an County, Sichuan Province, Wednesday evening.

The epicenter, at a depth of 17 kilometers, was monitored at 30.4 degrees north latitude and 102.9 degrees east longitude, according to the China Earthquake Networks Center (CENC).

The provincial earthquake department said the 6.1-magnitude Lushan earthquake was the aftermath of a 7.0-magnitude quake that hit the county in 2013.

The Yan earthquake hit again a third earthquake with a magnitude of 3.2 Thursday morning, according to the China Earthquake Networks Center, after being hit by two earthquakes on Wednesday.

Earthquake-prone Sichuan Province is located on the seismically active Tibetan Plateau.

More than 90,000 people were killed in the 7.9-magnitude earthquake in 2008, which caused extensive damage to life and property.

State media quoted local officials as saying that in Wednesday’s earthquake, a total of 13,081 people in the city were affected by the quakes, while 135 homes were seriously damaged, and 4,374 were slightly damaged.

Besides, five hydropower stations in Lushan County were damaged and many people were evacuated. The dead and injured occurred in Lushan and Baoxing counties, respectively.

More than 800 municipal reinforcements have been organized in Yan City to conduct search and rescue operations, treat the wounded, congest roads and relocate those affected by the quake, according to local authorities.

So far, 200 tents, 1,000 quilts and 200 tent lights have been sent to Lushan and Baoxing counties, local officials said, adding that 61 temporary shelters, 34 in Baoxing County and 27 in Lushan County, respectively, have been set up to transport 12,722 affected people. Official media reports said the disaster.
