CDC Moves Hays County Travis to “Medium” COVID Risk
Austin (KXAN) — The risks COVID-19 presents to the Travis and Hayes county communities have been upgraded to Level 2 “Medium” of the three risks, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Every week since February 24, the CDC assigns “COVID-19 Community Level” to counties across the country based on the impact of the virus on local residents.
The low, medium, and high-risk categories are determined based on three factors: the number of new cases in the last 7 days, new hospitalizations in the last 7 days, and the percentage of manned beds used by COVID-19 patients.
Hayes County has not been included in the low category since February 24th. At that time, COVID risk was considered high.
On the other hand, this is the first time Travis County has not been included in the low-risk category since the CDC introduced the community level.

Coldwell County is also considered a medium riskFor 3 consecutive weeks.
The Travis, Haze, and Caldwell counties all remain low in terms of hospitalization and bed use, but cross the threshold for new cases and automatically transition to medium risk.
As of June 9, Travis County has added 202.99 new cases per 100,000 inhabitants over the past seven days. Hayes County added 219.82 and Coldwell County added 231.31. The medium risk threshold is 200 per 100,000 residents.
McAllen’s hometown of Hidalgo County has been upgraded to high risk, and Texas counties are the first to fall into the high risk category since March. In addition to Travis, Haze and Caldwell, 23 other counties in the state belong to the medium risk category.
The CDC has the following recommendations, depending on the COVID-19 community level to which the county belongs.
Low risk
- Get the latest information on COVID vaccines
- Take a test if you have symptoms
Medium risk
- With the same precautions as low risk:
- If you are at high risk of serious illness, talk to your healthcare provider about whether you need to wear a mask and take other precautions.
High risk
- With the same precautions as medium risk:
- Wear a mask indoors in public
- People at high risk of severe illness may require additional precautions
