Luchi Gonzalez: San Jose Earthquakes appoint USMNT assistant coach

The San Jose Earthquakes have announced that assistant coach for the US men’s national team, Lucy Gonzalez, is the team’s next manager.

Gonzalez, who has served as USMNT assistant coach under Greg Berhalter since December 2021, will join the MLS team after the upcoming World Cup in Qatar.

“I am really excited about this opportunity with one of the founding clubs of the league,” Gonzalez said in a statement. “I thoroughly enjoyed working with the club’s leadership team throughout the interview process and was impressed by their vision for the future, both on and off the pitch.

“As excited as I am about this opportunity, I will remain focused on helping the US national team be as successful as possible during the FIFA World Cup and will be ready to give everything for San Jose once this journey is over.”

The last time the Earthquakes striker trained at MLS with FC Dallas, he was an academy director before becoming club director. In nearly three years as a coach, Gonzalez went 28-26-32 and went into the playoffs in each of his two full seasons as a coach. Upon joining the USMNT, he effectively switched places with Nico Estevez, who went on to take on the vacant role of Gonzalez in Dallas after serving as Berhalter’s assistant. Berhalter’s former third assistant, Josh Wolff, also secured a position as the MLS coach at FC Austin.

The Earthquakes are currently thirteenth (out of 14) in the Western Conference, and have made the playoffs only twice in the past nine seasons. The club launched seven games on Matias Almeida this season and is led by interim coach Alex Cofilo until the end of the season.
