Utah health experts demand vaccine as flu cases continue to surge
SALT LAKE CITY—Last week’s spike in flu cases has worried many health experts, encouraging people to get a flu shot now if they haven’t already.
Dr. Payal Patel, Infectious Disease Specialist at Intermountain Healthcare, said: “These are things that we see every year, but this year we had RSV earlier, influenza earlier than usual, and more influenza and RSV than usual.”

Marion Bishop, M.D., emergency room physician at Brigham City Community & Cache Valley Hospital, said: “Every time I go to the ER, I take care of people who are vaccinated and have the flu, and people who are not vaccinated and have the flu. Better, the flu is a much milder illness.”
Both doctors advise staying home if you or anyone in your family isn’t feeling well this holiday season. I think we are letting our guard down.
“Before getting the COVID vaccine, everyone was worried,” Dr. Patel explained.
Dr. Bishop said that if you have been ill for some time, it may be beneficial to be tested to determine if you are dealing with flu, RSV, COVID, or even strep. He said this could allow medical professionals to provide better treatment.
Both Patel and Bishop said it’s not too late if you haven’t gotten your flu shot yet, and stressed the need to get vaccinated this season.
“If you’re nervous, or you know someone in your family is nervous, I think it’s time to go get a flu shot,” Dr. Patel said.
