An earthquake shakes the Adelaide Hills, and an earthquake is also monitored in the southern suburbs

A small earthquake shook parts of the Adelaide Hills early this morning, with reports as far away as the outer southern suburbs of the city.

Key points: A 2.2-magnitude earthquake was detected across the hills and suburbs, there were about 50 reports from Wattle Park to Huntfield Heights, and a Kangarilla local described being awake.

According to Geoscience Australia’s online seismic tracker, the 2.2-magnitude quake occurred just before sunrise, at 5:40 am, with the epicenter near Mount Barker and Ichunga.

So far there have been about 50 reports from people who felt the earthquake, which occurred at a depth of about 4 km.

Most reports are from Echunga and surrounding towns within a 15 kilometer radius, including Stirling, Bridgewater, Aldgate and Hahndorf.

The largest town that felt the quake was Mount Barker, which accounts for about a fifth of the reported detections.

But the quake was also detected in Huntfield Heights in south Adelaide about 25km away, as well as Wattle Park to the northeast.

Jonathan Bathgate, chief earthquake expert at Geoscience Australia, said that although there were no reports of damage, the earthquake was felt “on a very large scale” by residents.

“Most people have reported feeling some shaking that lasted for a few seconds — a bit of a rumble, people mistaking it for thunder or a truck going by — but something woke quite a few people this morning,” Dr. Bathgate said.

“This area is relatively active, and we have earthquakes here very frequently. Within 50 kilometers of the epicenter this morning, over the past 10 years, there have been 24 other earthquakes recorded, so that’s an average of two earthquakes per year.”

For Shane Farrell, a breeder of Kangarilla horses, it was a case of shaking but not shuddering — note the crackle, before drifting back to sleep.

“It wasn’t dramatic, but I’m a very light sleeper,” he said.

“I actually thought someone was shaking my bed or someone was trying to wake me up.

“My cat is scared, actually… I opened my eyes and my cat was running scared and she went and hid.

“I thought it was an earthquake, but I wasn’t 100 percent sure, and then I was told later that it was.”

The earthquake is not the first in the Adelaide Hills this year.

In March, there were tremors of magnitude 2.9 and 3.7 near Mount Barker, as well as an aftershock of magnitude 2.5.

“The biggest in that area was 5.4 in magnitude in 1954 which did a lot of damage in Adelaide… [and] “There is a potential in that area for relatively large earthquakes that could be devastating,” said Dr. Bathgate.

“Some of that stress that builds up at plate boundaries is transferred further into the plate, so we get these earthquakes that are generally smaller and that happen along fault lines that are within the tectonic plate.”
