The 5.4-magnitude earthquake is the latest in a series of seismic events that have rocked Texas

Nearly a month after a 5.4-magnitude earthquake struck parts of the Lone Star State, residents were surprised again on Friday evening by another 5.5-magnitude earthquake centered near the town of Midland.

The USGS reports that the quake occurred about 3 miles below rural Texas terrain, but the tremor was reported over a wide area stretching from New Mexico through the heart of Texas.

Small earthquakes are not uncommon in Texas, seismologists said, but larger events are rare. Many earthquakes are associated with fracking of oil and reinjection of fluids underground.

“The area is known for oil and gas production, so the search will be done. We’re sure people will be looking at the number of sewage injection sites in the area,” said the USGS seismologist.

November’s magnitude 5.4, which occurred about 100 miles from Friday’s epicenter, caused state oil and gas regulators to propose tougher temporary limits on oil and gas production to help reduce seismic activity.

Seismologists said it was still too early to say whether the recent earthquake was related to the injection of sewage. However, researchers will be working around the clock to determine the cause.

There were no initial reports of major damage around the epicenter or in other areas of Texas.

If the magnitude of the earthquake is not adjusted downward, the quake would be classified as one of the most powerful earthquakes to affect the region.

According to USGS records, the 6.0-magnitude earthquake that rocked the city of Valentine in 1931 holds the record for being the largest earthquake to affect the state.
