WHO outlines new framework for early detection and management of breast cancer

Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus

The World Health Organization (WHO) has released new framework guidelines with the goal of saving 2.5 million lives from breast cancer by 2040 through a combination of early detection, timely diagnosis and comprehensive management. bottom.1

In 95% of countries, breast cancer is the number one or two cause of cancer death in women. However, about 80% of deaths from breast and cervical cancer occur in low- and middle-income countries. In high-income countries, her 5-year survival rate for breast cancer patients exceeds her 90%. However, the proportion falls in lower and middle-income countries.2

The high mortality rate from breast cancer among low- and middle-income countries and disadvantaged populations is due to late diagnosis and limited access to quality treatment. Lack of awareness of the benefits of early detection and effective treatment exacerbates these rates in some low- or middle-income countries.

Established by WHO in 2021, the Global Breast Cancer Initiative (GBCI) aims to reduce breast cancer mortality by 2.5% annually over 20 years through three pillars outlined in new WHO guidelines. Columns include:

  • Improving Health for Early Detection (Pre-Diagnosis Interval): GBCI has set a goal of 60% or more of invasive cancer patients diagnosed with stage I or II.
  • Timely Breast Diagnosis (Diagnostic Interval): Patients should undergo diagnostic evaluation, imaging studies, tissue sampling, and pathology within 60 days of diagnosis.
  • Comprehensive Breast Cancer Management: More than 80% of patients should receive multimodality therapy without abandonment.

“Countries with weak health systems have the lowest capacity to manage the growing burden of breast cancer. It must be a matter,” WHO Director-General Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said in a news release.1 “We have the tools and know-how to prevent breast cancer and save lives. We are helping more than 70 countries, especially low- and middle-income countries, to give them hope for a cancer-free future.”

This framework will clearly strengthen health care systems to adapt to the growing burden of breast cancer through sustainable, cost-effective and equitable early detection methods and treatment services, especially in low- and middle-income countries. points out the need. .

“Countries need to ensure that this framework is engaged and integrated into primary health care. This effort not only supports health promotion but also ensures that women seek and receive health care throughout their life cycle. ,” said Dr Bente Mikkelsen, WHO Director for Noncommunicable Diseases. “Effective and sustainable primary her health care provides a path to universal health her coverage.”
