MRHS Exchange students raise funds for Turkey earthquake relief

The tragic news of the February 6 earthquake in Turkey and Syria that killed thousands of people was especially devastating for 15-year-old Turkish exchange student Neva Salta, a sophomore at Monomoy Regional High School. Although Salta’s family was fortunately not directly affected by the disaster, some of her AFS international exchange friends lost family members, homes and friends. Salta, who keeps in touch with fellow exchange students from Turkey and other countries via platforms like WhatsApp and Instagram, recalls learning that a high school friend in California lost her family in the earthquake. After a frightening six-hour period without any news from home, Salta is finally able to contact her father and make sure her family is safe. “A lot of my friends couldn’t sleep at night,” said Salta. “After the earthquake it was cold. Schools were closed for a week because of the cold before the earthquake, so it was really cold. So people who might have survived under the rubble will still be in danger from the cold.” ESL teacher Mimi van der Burgh has conducted a “Solo Cup Fundraiser” – where red plastic drink cups are used to raise money for a cause – in the past to help raise money for relief in Haiti as well as in the aftermath of the recent earthquake in the Republic of Dominican. When I realized a female student from Turkey was attending MRHS, I set out to help. “When I suggested the fundraising idea to Neva, her face lit up,” said Van der Burgh. “The next step was for Niva to record a short informational video about the situation in Turkey in TV production class, which was then shared with the video advertisements we show at school every morning.” Van der Burgh said the response to the fundraising effort has been enthusiastic so far. About $60 was raised over the first few days via individual trophy groups at the school. Similar fundraising efforts in the past have raised up to $400 to help those in need when disaster strikes. Van der Burgh also co-leads the Diversity Club at the MRHS along with fellow teacher Joan Weekes, and fundraising efforts are underway within the club as well. The fundraising effort will continue until March 17, at which time the money raised to help those suffering from the earthquake in Turkey will be sent via the international humanitarian aid online platform Care.org.
