Santa Clara County Deploys New Approach to Kill Mosquitoes – NBC Bay Area
Santa Clara County is turning to drones to kill mosquitoes.
This week, the county’s Vector Control district launched a new program to treat areas with a larvicide to kill mosquito eggs using drones.
“It’s only effective against the targeted mosquito larvae,” said Nayer Zahiri, Santa Clara County Vector Control District Manager. “No other insects or animals are harmed.”
Drones fly over swamps and other remote uninhabited areas.
The county contracted a company called Leading Edge Aerial Technologies to target landscapes that the crew could not easily reach on foot.
“I don’t recommend coming in here,” said Zahiri. “Using drones would be better because they have less impact on the habitat.”
In the past, Vector Control used helicopters to drop larvicides. Staff say drones are a much more efficient way to get rid of mosquitoes before they reach adulthood and reduce mosquito-borne diseases like West Nile virus.
“The drone uses GPS guidance to align the swaths,” said Drone Pilot Joseph Davis. “Drones are very good at getting in and out of areas where you don’t necessarily want to send manned aircraft.”
All the rain this year means more water pools for mosquitoes to lay their eggs in. Right now is the time when insects start looking for a place to hatch.
The county is asking citizens to do their part by clearing out standing water.
“This year is going to be a very difficult year to get rid of mosquitoes,” Zahiri said.
