Tsunami warning A 7.1-magnitude earthquake struck east of New Caledonia in the Pacific Ocean

Another 7.1-magnitude earthquake rocked eastern New Caledonia on Saturday in the Pacific Ocean, the US Geological Survey said. This comes a day after a 7.7-magnitude earthquake hit the same area. The US Geological Survey said the epicenter was at a depth of 35 kilometers (22 miles) and was approximately 300 kilometers (190 miles) east of the archipelago of New Caledonia.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center stated in its latest bulletin that any tsunami waves are expected to be less than 0.3 meters (1 foot) in height. A tsunami warning was issued for coasts 300 km (185 miles) from the epicenter. It was reported that waves may reach the Pacific islands of Fiji, Kiribati, Vanuatu and Wallis and Futuna.

Tsunami warnings were issued for countries in the South Pacific on Friday following a 7.7-magnitude earthquake southeast of the Loyalty Islands in the French overseas territory of New Caledonia. Vanuatu’s National Disaster Management Office recommended residents flee coastal areas and ascend to higher elevations as soon as possible.
