Melbourne residents have been shaken awake all night after a 4.6-magnitude earthquake jolted the Victorian high country in the dead of night.

Geoscience Australia said the epicenter was near the town of Rawson, about 170km east of Melbourne, at 1.32am on Friday.

The earthquake was felt by thousands of people across Melbourne and regional Victoria, which shook homes and buildings.

Reports have come from people who live near Albury, on the New South Wales border, in the Melbourne CBD and as far west as Hamilton. More than 7,000 people recorded their experience with the Geosciences “Welt Report” in the following hours.

The Met Office has advised that there is no threat of a tsunami.

The moderate earthquake caused homes and furniture to shake in Melbourne, as residents took to social media to ask, “What’s going on?”

The latest quake, which occurred at a depth of seven kilometers, was the third to hit the Victorian capital in recent months.

On June 3, a magnitude 2.4 earthquake struck the Mornington Peninsula just after midday and was felt as far north as Melbourne.

On May 29, Melbourne experienced its strongest earthquake in 120 years, as a 3.8-magnitude earthquake struck Sunbury, in the northwest of the city, late at night.

Also this month, residents of the small town of Appin, near Sydney, described experiencing “lifting” and shaking during an earthquake on June 18.

Seismologist Elodie Borliss told ABC News Breakfast that there were no early reports of damage.

She said the frequency of recent earthquakes in Victoria was “completely normal seismic activity” compared to records going back 100 years.

“I wouldn’t say they’re frequent, no. They won’t become more frequent. It’s very normal seismic activity,” she said.

Comedian Magda Zupanski was among the Melbourne family members who popped in after their latest tumultuous experience.

“Earthquake??? again?? Melbourne Peep??” she tweeted.

A Melbourne resident told the ABC that the nighttime earthquake made him wake up.

He said, “The earthquake just woke me up…it just shook my house, it shook and I rolled around, and I just got out of bed.”

Other Melbourne residents have taken to Twitter to describe their experiences.

“I went downstairs as soon as the quake was over to see my mom’s panicked face saying ‘Is that when we go and stand outside.’ No, mom, this shake-up doesn’t require you to stand outside, you just moved your bed not the roof of the house,” Ham-Bam joked.
