New Delhi, July 20: A severe earthquake was reported in Jammu and Kashmir Frontier Province on Monday. I felt tremors for a few seconds, late at night in the Katra region. The tremor was felt 87 km east of Katra, a prominent town used as a stopping point by worshipers visiting the Vaishno Devi Shrine. The area is located in Raisi district, near Kishtwar. The region is the point of geographical designation between Jammu and the Kashmir Valley.

According to the National Seismology Center, tremors were felt at 10:02 pm. The earthquake intensity was measured at 3.5 on the Richter scale.

“An earthquake measuring 3.5 on the Richter scale occurred at 2202 hours, 87 km east of Katra, Jammu and Kashmir,” said the statement from the Seismological Authority.

The Himalayas are susceptible to moderate to moderate earthquakes. The last major tremors were reported in the region last year when a strong earthquake of 5.6 magnitude in occupied Kashmir, Pakistan, killed 40 people.
