PMIS: The Latest Post Covid-19 Challenge for Doctors Treating Children

A doctor at the BJ Wadia Hospital Children’s Hospital in Parel, Mumbai, came across a rare illness in a four and a half year old child. Doctors explained that PMIS develops shock-like syndromes in vital organs such as the heart, lungs and kidneys, after which children become very critical. Of the 100 strange Covid-19-positive patients treated in the hospital, about 18 had PMIS symptoms and were hospitalized in a serious condition.

In total, the hospital saw about 600 cases with mild Covid-19 symptoms. With this syndrome, children develop fever, rash, and even diarrhea, but they recover. However, those who are in shock need intensive and aggressive treatment. They need ventilation and supportive care. They likewise need a lot of time to recover. Doctors say the syndrome is also seen in adults, but children do not have the ability to withstand such onslaught and thus require aggressive treatment.

“Some of the hospitalized children have a family history of Covid-19, which indicates a post-Covid-19 illness. Some of the 18 cases are at a critical stage. It’s important to recognize this early, because we lost some at a critical stage,” Dr. Shakuntala Prabhu added.

But she also gives her parents a word of advice. She said, “If your child has a common cold and fever for a few days and feels shortness of breath or a rash, then you should be brought in for an examination immediately, or if you have a fever attack and then return. But be careful.”

BJ Wadia Hospital for Children’s management said the Covid-19 team, which has specialists including nephrologists and cardiologists, is already in place to realize the seriousness of the situation. This is due to the fact that 14 of the 18 patients hospitalized for PMIS had heart failure.

A doctor at Wadia Hospital meets daily to check what can be done for children suffering from PMIS. They are on targeted therapy and are regularly monitored.
