Lily Fulop, Chatham Hall Class graduate in 2014, has published “Wear, Repair, Repurpose” with Countryman Press / WW Norton & Company.
Subtitled A Manufacturer’s Guide to Mending and Recycling Clothing, the book is aimed at a wide range of audiences: sewing novices looking for a place to start, anyone who cares about durability and want to tackle the throwaway culture, and vintage fashion enthusiasts and economists interested in saving old clothes.
During my last year in college, I worked on a project on using design for social and environmental change, “Fulop said.” I decided I wanted to create a community to raise awareness about fashion sustainability and inspire people to repair and recycle to reduce fashion. waste. I created my Instagram account, @mindful_mending, and started sharing tutorials and educational tools. I also created zines [self-published tabloids] and hosted mending nights, where I taught my friends how to sew. “
My online presence caught the attention of my editor, who was looking for someone to write a book on repair. Although I’m young and relatively new to mending, they really liked the way I visually communicated ideas and made techniques accessible. So I spent a year and a half creating projects, illustrating tutorials, writing the book, and helping with the design. It was released in March 2020, and I’m so proud it’s in the world.
Fulop, who majored in visual communication design at Carnegie Mellon University, is currently working as a designer for Refinery29. Her interest in textiles dates back to her childhood when she began to knit, crochet and sew. While at Chatham Hall, Fulop received an iQuest grant to support an independent study in graphic design over the past year.
I learned typesetting, typography and web design, she says. It was a great experience to have a head start in the field before arriving in my design program the following year for college. It was also very helpful to practice self-directed study and take control of my own learning.
Fulop has also been co-editor of The Iris art and literature magazine, Chatham Halls. In this role, she managed the creative submissions as well as the post design.
This was my first experience with curation, art direction and print design, which are skills that I now use in my career, she noted.
For Fulop, the publication of “Wear, Repair, Reurpose” is just the beginning. She hopes to continue to find ways to intertwine her interests and balance her career as a visual designer with her passion for craftsmanship and sustainable clothing.
