Babcock joins the hockey staff at the University of Vermont as a voluntary advisor
Mike Babcock joins the University of Vermont hockey team as a voluntary advisor for the 2020-21 season.
Fired as coach of the Toronto Maple Leafs on November 20, 2019 and replaced by Sheldon Keefe, Babcock will join the staff of freshman Vermont coach Todd Woodcroft, most recently an assistant to the Winnipeg Jets. Woodcroft was hired on April 15 by Vermont.
“Mike and I have been connected for over 15 years and our network goes back even further to our McGill University experience,” Woodcroft said of his and Babcock’s alma mater. “He is a leading coach on every athletic platform and as a coaching staff we are fortunate to draw on his experience. Mike’s knowledge, network and most importantly the modern lens he uses to watch the hockey game will progress our entire help accelerate the program. “
Babcock, the eighth winning coach in NHL history, had a record of 700-418-164 with 19 tires in 17 seasons with the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim, Detroit Red Wings and Maple Leafs, and won the Stanley Cup with the Red Wings in 2008. The 57-year-old, who had a record 90-74 in 164 Stanley Cup Playoff games, helped Toronto reach the playoffs in each of the past three seasons, but failed to pass the Eastern Conference first round. He held a record of 173-133-45 in five seasons with the Maple Leafs.
Internationally, he has coached Canada to five tournament championships; the Vancouver Olympics in 2010 and the Sochi Olympics in 2014; the 2016 hockey world cup; the 2004 World Championship and the 1997 World Junior Championship.
Woodcroft was an assistant to the 2004 World Cup team.
Mark Stuart, a former NHL defender, joined the Vermont staff as a volunteer.

Stuart, who played for the Jets from 2011-17, scored 93 points (26 goals, 67 assists) in 673 NHL games over 12 seasons with the Boston Bruins, Atlanta Thrashers and Winnipeg, and scored four points (one goal, three assists ) in 26 playoff games.
