A new form of Linux malware cleverly uses the Dogecoin API

As many companies shift their workloads to cloud environments, the threat of Linux becomes more prevalent and cybercriminals have devised new tools and techniques to launch attacks on their Linux infrastructure.

One technique they often use is to scan publicly accessible Docker servers and exploit misconfigured Docker API ports to set up their own containers and clean the victim’s infrastructure for malware. If a hacker exploits the Docker API to deploy a new server within the corporate cloud infrastructure, the server running a version of Alpine Linux will be infected with Doki as well as crypto mining malware.

According to Intezer researchers, Doki’s goal is to primarily control the server that the hacker hijacked, ensuring that the encryption process continues. However, unlike other backdoor Trojans, the new malware uses the Dogecoin API to determine the URL of the C&C server it needs to connect to in order to receive new instructions.

Doki uses a dynamic algorithm known as the DGA or domain generation algorithm to determine C&C addresses that use the Dogecoin API. Operators of the Ngrok botnet can also easily change the server on which the malware receives commands by executing a single transaction from within the controlling Dogecoin wallet.

If DynDNS happens to receive an abuse report on the current Doki C&C URL and the site goes down, the cyber criminals will create a new transaction, determine the subdomain value, set up a new DynDNS account and claim the subdomain. Just do it. This clever tactic prevents companies and law enforcement from tearing down Doki’s backend infrastructure, as it must first take over control of the Dogecoin wallet from Ngrok.
