An earthquake and a group of aftershocks shake the El Centro area

The farming community of El Centro in Imperial County experienced a harsh awakening in the middle of the night: a 4.8-magnitude earthquake and a long series of aftershocks.

The quake struck about 12:36 a.m. Tuesday, about two miles northwest of El Centro, in an area off the Salton Sea with active faults, said Elizabeth Cochran, a seismologist with the U.S. Geological Survey.

The earthquake was followed by a 4.5 magnitude aftershock. In the 12 hours that followed, more than 180 less powerful aftershocks were recorded.
