COVID-19 Patients Have Heart Damage Months After Recovery: A New Study
New evidence suggests that coronaviruses have a lasting effect on the heart, alerting cardiologists concerned about the potential long-term heart damage of COVID-19.
Two German studies published Tuesday Refereed journal JAMA CardiologyThey found heart abnormalities in COVID-19 patients months after they had already recovered from the disease caused by SARS-CoV-2.
The first study included 100 patients from the Frankfurt University Hospital COVID-19 registry who were relatively healthy adults in their 40s and 50s. About one-third of the patients required hospitalization while the remaining patients recovered from home.
The researchers examined magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) images of the heart taken approximately two and a half months after being diagnosed and compared them with those of people who had never had COVID-19. In this study, 78 patients had heart abnormalities, of which 60 showed signs of viral myocardial inflammation.
“When this caught our attention, we were hit,” said Dr. Clyde Yancy, a cardiologist at Northwestern Memorial Hospital and editor of JAMA Cardiology.
The vast majority of patients showed no symptoms, and these specific abnormalities detected by MRI were not seen on standard clinical, more commonly used echocardiograms, and were therefore investigated without this study. It was virtually impossible to pinpoint the result settings.
According to experts, inflammation is an important link with COVID-19, as the disease has a clinical reputation for a high inflammatory response. Dr. Thomas Maddox, chairman of the American College of Cardiology’s Scientific and Quality Committee, said that inflammation of the heart can cause weakness of the heart muscle and, in rare cases, an abnormal heartbeat.
Inflammation is the first prerequisite for heart failure, and over the long term it can “leave significant residual damage” that can “scenario” other forms of heart disease, Yancy said.

“We don’t say that COVID-19 causes heart failure, but it does give us some early evidence of possible heart damage,” Yancy said.
Maddox says more studies suggest that heart damage in COVID-19 patients may be a “bystander effect” of the overall inflammatory response to the virus, rather than direct infiltration of the virus into the heart Is said to have contributed to.
