Thousands reported feeling the quake near Upper Hutt

A 4.7 magnitude earthquake struck the Lower North Island.

GeoNet said the earthquake occurred 5 kilometers northeast of Upper Hutt and at a depth of 20 kilometers.

More than 8,000 people have already reported feeling it shortly after it happened at 5.18am.

By 5.35am, more than 11,000 people had reported.

GeoNet defined the amount of shaking as “moderate.”

People reported feeling it as far away as Wanaka in the South Island and Auckland in the north.

The majority of people reported the vibration as “mild.”

A number of people commented on the GeoNet Facebook page saying the quake had woken them up.
