Taiwan earthquake: Death toll rises to 16, Singaporean couple still missing

TAIPEI – The death toll from last week's devastating earthquake in Taiwan rose to 16 on Wednesday after three more bodies were found on a hiking trail, officials said.

The 7.4-magnitude earthquake that struck the island on April 3 injured more than 1,100 people, with strict building codes and widespread disaster preparedness helping to avert a larger disaster.

Authorities discovered the three victims on Wednesday while working to recover two other bodies buried under rocks along Chakadang Road in eastern Taiwan's Hualien County, the epicenter of the quake.

Taiwan's National Fire Agency said three people were still missing on Chakadang Road, including two Singaporeans.

Singaporeans Sim Hui Kok and Niu Siu Chu were last seen at a bus station in Hualien, preparing to board a shuttle bus bound for Taroko National Park, famous for its rugged mountainous terrain.

The Taiwan Immigration Agency said the missing couple were a married couple.

President Tsai Ing-wen visited Hualien City on Wednesday to thank rescuers and pledge rapid disaster relief in quake-hit areas.

“Everyone has worked hard over the past week and I thank you very much for your efforts,” Tsai said.

“The central government is fully committed and working closely with local governments to implement post-disaster recovery and revitalization plans as quickly as possible.”

Last Wednesday's earthquake was the most serious in Taiwan since a 7.6-magnitude earthquake struck the island in 1999.

The death toll from this earthquake reached 2,400 people, making it the deadliest natural disaster in the island's history.
