This is the chair I was in when the earthquake happened, and I was distracted by my technology device.

I walked into my third classroom like any other day and took my seat. Class mostly consists of me keeping my eyes glued to my computer screen and meticulously completing work in my class. It was one of those classes where the students around me and I were completely silent, and the closest thing I could hear to noise was the clicking of people's keyboards.

When the bell rang, my classmates and I all rushed to grab our phones from the phone holder. I scrolled through my phone to check if there was anything I missed. Although checking my notifications is usually unexciting, this time I saw a message that surprised me. It was from my father- “Did you feel the earthquake?? Are you okay??”

I had to re-read the message several times to process it. “What earthquake?” I believed.

Then, my phone started ringing nonstop, and my friends were posting their Snapchat stories about the earthquake. I couldn't understand it. How did everyone feel about the earthquake except me?

When I walked into the next classroom, it seemed like everyone was talking about it. My teacher told the interesting story of how she was in the library when she felt the table shaking, and when she looked around she saw the bookshelves shaking as well. Many students began sharing their stories as well.

Later that day, as I was scrolling through my phone at home, my friends started posting their stories again. Without thinking much about it, I clicked on the stories, and what I saw blew my mind. “Oh my God, another earthquake,” I read. The city experienced aftershocks, and once again I missed the catastrophic event.

I know it's been a long time since the Earth moved here in Westport, but I still think about it, asking myself over and over again: How could I miss an earthquake twice?

I've come up with only one possible explanation: technology. Every time the ground trembled, I was either typing on my computer, or mindlessly scrolling through short clips of funny videos.

I missed the earthquakes because I let screens consume my time and attention. This got me thinking: What else did I miss? I wonder.
