Dr Dieffenbach said the development of an HIV vaccine is the only way to truly control the global HIV pandemic. “Currently we have drug-based tools – antiretrovirals – that are excellent for treatment and very useful for prevention, but to truly be equitable and control the global pandemic, we will need a safe, effective and durable HIV vaccine that can be used in all age groups, from infants through to adults,” he said.
Lewis noted that a vaccine would have a major impact on people in the U.S. and abroad. “There are still millions of people newly diagnosed with HIV around the world, and thousands of people in the U.S. are diagnosed with HIV each year. So having a safe and effective vaccine that can prevent people from getting HIV, that can be taken for years and has long-lasting effects, would have a particularly big impact on Black and Brown communities in the U.S. and around the world,” he said.
Looking to the future, Dieffenbach added that he's excited that researchers are now understanding vulnerable sites on the HIV virus — sites that remain relatively stable even as the virus mutates. “Going forward, we'll be able to develop vaccines that target these vulnerable sites, combine them into a vaccine, and give vaccinated people the tool we're looking for — the ability to make antibodies, which we know will protect them from HIV infection,” he said.
