The Greek island of Rhodes was hit by a 4.9-magnitude earthquake, with a temperature warning still in effect.

The Seismic Laboratory at the University of Athens and the US Geological Survey confirmed that the quake struck the popular tourist area at around 8.20pm on Wednesday.

A spokesman for the European Mediterranean Seismological Center (EMSC) told The Sun: “Based on preliminary seismic data, the earthquake should not have caused any major damage, but it may have been felt by many people as mild vibrations in the epicenter area.” “.

This comes amid the first heat wave in Greece in the summer.

On Wednesday, the Meteorological Authority in the Mediterranean country issued a heat warning until eight o’clock on Thursday evening.

Temperatures are expected to exceed 40 degrees Celsius today in most parts of central and southern Greece, including Greater Athens, the Cyclades Islands and Crete.

Authorities in the Greek capital closed the Acropolis – the country's most popular archaeological site which saw four million visitors last year – for the second day in the afternoon due to unusually high temperatures.

Meteorologists say the high temperatures are caused by southern winds that bring hot air and dust from North Africa.

Officials have also been on high alert in anticipation of forest fires.
