Calgary daycare closes for second time after E. coli infection confirmed – Calgary

A Calgary childcare centre was closed Wednesday afternoon after a child attending the centre tested positive for E. coli.

In a statement, Furing Brains Academy confirmed to parents that a 1-year-old child at the West 85th campus tested positive for E. coli.

The daycare said there was no evidence that this latest case originated or spread at the facility.

“However, out of an abundance of caution, to conduct deep cleaning and ensure the safety and health of our students and staff, we have voluntarily closed our West 85th campus for the remainder of this week,” the academy said.

“We immediately contacted Alberta Health Services and are awaiting further guidance from them.”

In a statement to Global News, AHS spokesperson Kelly Williamson said the health network is aware of a suspected case of E. coli in one child attending a Calgary daycare center.

He said AHS was in contact with the child care center's operator to gather more information and also confirmed the center had been closed “out of an abundance of caution.”

“AHS will share more information as it learns more about this situation,” Williamson said.

This is the second time in less than a year that Furing Brains' West 85th campus has been closed due to an E. coli infection.

In September 2023, E. coli outbreaks were declared at six Fueling Brains locations, including the one on West 85th Street, and five locations that share a central kitchen.

“It's always going to be a shock to us, having been through such a traumatic experience in the fall,” said Sarah McDonald, a parent of a child who attends Fueling Brains' new Brighton campus.

McDonald's son was one of more than 350 people affected by the largest outbreak of E. coli infections linked to a single food source last September.

Many parents participated in an outside investigation into food safety practices initiated by the state, and an interim report is expected to be released by the end of 2023, but parents have not yet heard the results, MacDonald said.

“I haven't seen any official documentation that tells me what happened,” she said. “It's incredibly frustrating that a child could be so severely injured and almost a year later we still don't have any answers. It's really hard.”

Furing Brains told Global News that safety remains its top priority, adding that the company is working with families, staff and AHS to determine next steps.

Two food inspection reports conducted by AHS at the West 85th campus this year found no violations.

Meanwhile, the academy is asking parents not to send their children to other nurseries for the rest of the week.

Staff are also asking parents and children at the 85th West campus not to attend the Calgary Stampede events on Friday.

If symptoms begin to appear, parents should immediately take their child to a doctor or call 811.

“We apologise for any inconvenience caused by this closure and will provide further information as soon as possible,” the academy said.

According to the AHS, the main symptom associated with E. coli is diarrhea, which may be bloody.

Symptoms usually begin 1 to 10 days after consuming food contaminated with E. coli.

Most people infected with E. coli recover naturally within 10 days, but children, the elderly, and those with weakened immune systems are at higher risk of complications.

Furing Brains Academy said there is no evidence that E. coli originated or spread at the facility.
