CVRD reminds residents to 'prepare for earthquakes' after recent series of quakes off Vancouver Island

The Vancouver Islands Disaster Management Authority is reminding residents to prepare for a “major earthquake” after a series of recent earthquakes off the west coast of the Vancouver Islands.

The Comox Valley Emergency Management Service reminds people to expect the unexpected when it comes to earthquakes.

Natural Resources Canada seismologist Alison Bird said residents should prepare for a possible earthquake.

“These sea swarms are very normal and occur every year or so and should not be a cause for concern for the people of the Comox Valley. However, they serve as a reminder that this is ‘earthquake country’ and people should take steps to be prepared.”

Several earthquakes have been reported about 200 kilometres west of Port Alice in recent weeks, the largest of which was a 6.4 magnitude quake that Earthquakes Canada said was felt.

However, none of the recent small earthquakes are expected to cause a larger tremor or tsunami.

CVRD reminds residents to be prepared by having enough food and water for at least 72 hours, having an emergency kit, and having an emergency plan for your family and pets.
