New earthquake raises concerns in Campi Flegrei volcanic zone

A 4.0-magnitude earthquake struck late Monday in the Campi Flegrei (Flegra Fields) area, raising concerns among people living in the volcanic area near Naples about a wave of seismic activity.

The new quake comes after a 4.2-magnitude quake struck the region last week, the strongest in 40 years. Monday's quake also rocked Naples, with many people sleeping outdoors overnight for fear of buildings collapsing.

Authorities conducted searches of private and public buildings throughout the night. No major damage was reported.

“Don't let fear control you,” said José Gerardo della Ragoni, mayor of Bacoli. Civil Defence and Maritime Policy Minister Nello Musumeci said last week that an evacuation plan was being drawn up for Campi Flegrei in case it was needed.

“We have to start working immediately,” Musumeci said, stressing that about half a million people live in the area.
