Rising Couture Fashion Show Raises Funds for People with Disabilities

INDIANAPOLIS A fashion show, with a purpose.

Adults with intellectual disabilities train for their moment on stage.

Rising Pursuit Services is a Northeastern nonprofit organization that provides physical, mental and social health services to people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

The organization welcomes The Rising Couture Fashion Show like a fundraiser to pay for a bus.

Before attending Rising Pursuit Services' adult day program, Carlos Crawford, 24, says he spent a lot of time alone.

“I’ve been locking myself in my room all day, doing nothing, not exercising,” Crawford said. “This gives me a new meaning to socializing.”

“I have learning disabilities, post-traumatic stress disorder, major depression, anxiety and ADHD,” Crawford said.

“We like to support them and give them a safe, healthy place where they can come without feeling judged,” said Raven Powell, co-founder of RPS.

Powell and Alexis Burrus are co-founders and friends with a passion for helping others.

Burrus worked in residential care, while Powell was a licensed behavior technician.

“So we got together. We had this idea. We wanted to create an environment so they have a place to go after they’re 22. After they’re 22, they have to leave high school, and so we want to create an environment so they can continue to grow,” Burrus said.

The organization opened its doors in January 2024.

The co-founders say they need transportation to take their clients to and from the day program and out into the community.

“There’s more skills than just walking. They’re learning how to work together, encourage each other and encourage themselves. So I think it’s amazing to see,” Burrus said.
