Latter-day Saint Relief Targets Earthquakes, Hurricanes, Malnutrition – Deseret News
Recent news releases and reports illustrate how immediate relief and long-term support are being provided by the humanitarian arms of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
Emergency response
The church's Just Serve website hosted a Hurricane Beryl Crisis Cleanup Page to match volunteers with cleanup projects after the storm swept through the Caribbean and Texas last week.
The American Red Cross issued a press release noting that its emergency response to Hurricane Beryl was made possible by those who donated to its Annual Disaster Donations Program. The Annual Disaster Donations Program allows the American Red Cross to prepare before disaster strikes.
The press release listed The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints as one of the program’s million-dollar members, the highest tier in the ADGP. In addition to the church, other million-dollar members include Amazon; American Airlines; Anheuser-Busch; Bank of America; Caterpillar; CMA CGM; Costco Wholesale; Delta Air Lines; Elephant Health; Enterprise Mobility; FedEx; Lilly Endowment; Lowe’s Companies; McDonald’s; Merck; Microsoft; Nationwide; Pfizer; Starbucks; State Farm; Takeda; Truist; VSP Vision; Walmart and Walmart; and Wells Fargo.
Long term support
News coverage of earthquakes often dwindles as the months go by, but the Church of Jesus Christ continues to provide support six months after an earthquake struck Nanao, a city in the country's Ishikawa Prefecture, according to a news release.
The church is providing funds and volunteers to help rebuild the area's sacred shrines and temples. It is also providing volunteers to help with ongoing efforts to clean up the rubble.
In some cases, it may be necessary to use specialist contractors to salvage or demolish hazardous sites such as listed buildings, and The Church of Jesus Christ provides funds to cover the costs of demolition and repair.
For example, the church helped finance the demolition of the Mishima Kintohira Shrine, which was on the verge of collapse. Residents wanted to rebuild it but could not afford the demolition. The effort included salvaging documents and materials of historical value.
The project was supported by:
Two shrines, Mishima Kintohira Shrine and Nishinomiya Shrine. Four Buddhist temples: Nichiren Buddhist Temple, Konzan Chujoji Temple (Kojima Town), Jodo Shinshu Otani Shoganji Temple (Noto Island), and Jodo Shinshu Honganji Phoenix Mountain Kokinji Temple (Noto Island). Two temples, including the repair of the roof of the main hall of Kokinji Temple and the reconstruction of Shoganji Temple. The Church of Jesus Christ also provided volunteers to help with two service projects last month. The church's Helping Hands volunteers from two congregations cleared debris at the Jodo Sosainenji Temple.
Later, the church provided a truck and volunteers from the Latter Day Helping Hands organization who worked alongside other volunteer groups, including Buddhists, to salvage tiles from the roof of Saenji Temple, a historic building originally built in the 16th century. The roof collapsed in the earthquake and massive amounts of debris had to be removed by hand. In total, the groups removed nine truckloads of debris and preserved the roof tiles.
Combating global child malnutrition
Earlier this year, the Relief Society General Presidency of The Church of Jesus Christ announced a $55.8 million donation to expand its global initiative to improve maternal and child health worldwide, in collaboration with eight partners in 12 countries. The funds are expected to improve the health and well-being of 12 million children and 2.7 million women.
The project began as a local effort to help children in Guatemala and the Philippines and has now expanded to 17 countries. The project is based on four core pillars: nutrition, maternal and newborn care, immunization, and education. The Central America nutrition effort supports more than 6,000 children and mothers in Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua.
Overall impact
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints' humanitarian relief and other assistance totaled $1.36 billion in 2023, according to an annual report released in March.
The amount spent represents a 33% increase compared to 2022, when the church's humanitarian and social welfare spending reached $1.02 billion in 2022.
The report stated that the church provided 4,119 humanitarian projects in 191 countries, and organized 6.2 million hours of volunteer service.
The report also noted that the church had 11,368 social welfare and self-reliance missionaries in 2023.
